DC’s ‘12 Days of Christmas’

Social media project - Christmas 2011

We like to have a bit of fun at Christmas and do something creative that showcases our skills whilst also providing our clients, the other businesses we work with and our friends and family with some festive entertainment.

Following a team brainstorm we decided to go with Liz's suggestion to mark the run up to Christmas 2011 with a project that would involve people using Facebook and Twitter to take part in writing alternative lyrics to the well known Christmas song, The 12 Days of Christmas.

We designed and built a festive looking single page website to retrieve and display these posts and tweets. This was built using some existing tools to save time (we had client work to do after all) then given some bespoke flourishes to add some polish and sparkle.

The DC office was scheduled to shut down on 23rd December, so launched the initiative 12 days before then. We encouraged pretty much everyone we know to make suggestions for the lyrics than each day we would select a winning line for inclusion in the final song.

Not only did the project liven up the pre-Christmas period, it also demonstrated how useful social networks are in driving engagement in projects, even ones that are only 12 days long.  We also enjoyed putting Twitter and Facebook to a more unconventional use and pushing the social network boundaries a little.

Once the results were in the time came to record to winning lyrics.  You can view the (hugely embarassing) video here
