What did the Twitmas clues mean?

Well the competition’s over and some of you guessed it; the answer was...Potato/spud gun! Because some of the clues were a little cryptic we thought we’d explain them all for you here.
Clue 1 “This present may be found at the Bottom of a Christmas tree”
Bottom is an old UK television programme which featured a character called spud gun.
Clue 2 “Smashing football team”
Smash is name of a brand of instant mashed potato and the football team refers to Arsenal (the Gunners).
Clue 3 “Saxon weapon”
A Saxon is a type of potato and obviously a weapon is a gun.
Clue 4 “Check out http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001971/ and http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005261/”
The first is a link to the IMDB page of Ewen Bremner who played the character Spud in Trainspotting. The second is a link to the IMDB page of Brittany Murphy who once played a character called Molly Gunn in Uptown Girls.
Clue 5 “King Edward’s Arsenal”
Getting a bit easier now! King Edward is of course a type of potato and guns are found in an Arsenal.
Clue 6 “These jacket arms aren't sleeves”
Jackets obviously refers to jacket potatoes and arms is referring to guns.
Clue 7 “Spin dug spun”
We’ve thrown an anagram in here. Dug spun is an anagram of spud gun with the word spin referring to you having to rearrange the letters.
Clue 8 “Aardappel kanon. And you thought the other clues were double Dutch...”
We’ve really given it away now! Aardappel Kanon is Dutch for potato gun!
