It's a Knockout!

The team at Digital Consortium (and some friends we dragged along!) spent our Saturday afternoon running over inflatables, getting wet through and dressing up as, amongst other things, an old aged pensioner.

No we don’t just have strange hobbies – it was all in the name of charity as we made fools of ourselves for Overgate Hospice.

Not only was this a fantastic chance to raise money for a very deserving cause but we also decided to test out some new technologies along the way, give away a brand new iPod touch, and hopefully get more sponsors than anyone else! The technology that we chose to demonstrate was QR codes.

The codes, which are similar to barcodes, appeared on the T-shirts of each member of our Digital Consortium It’s A Knockout squad.  They were photographed by people attending the event with their mobile phones, which read the code for them. In this case the codes gave access to a competition entry form on our website, where they could enter their details in the hope of winning an iPod touch.

Everyone who accessed the site using the code, along with people following us on Twitter who had tweeted a special hash tag or who sponsored the team, was entered into the prize draw.

As well as QR codes we used this opportunity to embrace social networking.  The prize draw was filmed and then posted on video sharing website YouTube and links were posted on blogs and twitter so that everyone could see what we’d done and so that the winner could claim his prize.

So you can’t say we don’t practise what we preach.

We’re just waiting for all of the sponsor money to come in, but we’ll update you on how much we raised as soon as possible. Keep your fingers crossed for a massive total!
